Out of County Students

I see what you are saying, but that, but Wise County Schools are public schools. If you want to start making people pay a fee, you might as well consider them private schools instead. You are already receiving state funding depending upon the enrollment. It really doesnt matter if they live just across the county line or not.

The one thing it ends and yes opens up. The infamous tuition fee.
It isn't going to be something most want to look at.
But at the same time, it makes each county responsible for the education they provide.
If the education is not there. It gives some lead way for options with the county the student is from actually footing the bill tuition wise.
I don't know how or what it would do, but i do see what some are talking about.
They don't want to charge the families, so let the county that cannot provide the education the family wants, pay for the tuition charge.
That way at least the parents feel their not paying taxes for something their kids are not getting.
And on the side, WC and other counties, make money off educating children who come here to get their education.
I don't know all of what it's to be. But i can see some benefits and some drawbacks. It's a new area to look at.

We had to restrict the students who lived in other counties, but came to Charlotte because of space. The middle school that I work at opened 13 years ago. We outgrew it three years ago. A locker room was converted into my Health classroom. A breezeway was enclosed and made into a new classroom. There are talks of adding two classrooms per grade level. The argument about getting a better education in another county is dicey, at best. If a county system has not been accredited or has been found deficient in several specific areas in the AYP of NCLB, then the students are allowed to transfer to a higher-performing school division. Outside of that, your pretty much stuck.

What L{D is saying is that even though the state pays 85% tp 95% of the students cost the county comes up with the rest meaning that Wise Co tax payers are subsdusing Russlee Co students (in the case of StPaul)

IMHO you will NEVER get another Co to PAY the remaning amount unless that have some type of say so on the SB. Currenty there are many School districts that charge tuation to out of dictrict students (DB comes to mind) it would not shock me to see this happen in Wise Co especaly if State funds get slashed and the portion that the Co pays gooes up

it would be interesting to find out what the exact figures are....until then, how can anyone say it is or is not costing us (wise co. taxpayers) to pay more? just like in any business, our schools have fixed operating(overhead) costs that have to be payed regardless of the number of students that attend school there, especially with the state of these old buildings.

what does 400 out-of-county students cost wise county taxpayers that we wouldn't have to pay anyway?? at 25 students per teacher, let's figure 16 teachers at say 40,000 in compensation and benefits, it would be $640,000. how much in state money do those 400 students bring to wise county? what other costs are there that aren't already fixed? textbooks for these students? let's say $200 per each of these 400 students, making it $80,000.

640,000 + 80,000= $720,000

transportation? probably no additional expenditures, buses already run to the county lines anyway.

so do these 400 students bring wise county more than $720,000 in revenue from the state?? i'm asking because i don't know. somebody find some concrete figures and then we can make an intelligent decision.

Honestly There were out of county figures presented at one time and while I can not remember what they were I DO remeber that somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of StPaul was Russcle Co. if 100 of those kids were sent back to Russcle Co. and the other 100 sent to Coeburn then you have taken care of the fixed overhead of one whole school (I am sure that there would have to be extra teachers/staff added at Coeburn but the overhead of the building itself would be eliminated) I have been ripped before for being ProConsoladation and I do not feel like getting into that fight again so I will NOT make the judgment call on whether it is the right thing to do or not however if Wise Co. starts charging tuition to OOC students I see it as a precursor to closing some schools (1 in particular)

This opens up a lot of issues no one has looked at.

I have no ideas or answers. This was ask of a few people to research.

I'm like six. What does it cost more or less. It is some what interesting, and from what i understand, a parent of an out of county student ask about it.

They figured it would actually benefit WC. Better than a tuition would.
